Description

ST. JOSEPH'S ALTAR SOCIETY PICNIC, WORKMAN HOUSE COURTYARD Color: Black; White A black and white reproduction photograph with copy of the St. Joseph's Altar Society picnic, Workman House courtyard arbor, 1928. A long table or set of tables with a white cloth, centerpiece, place settings and food are set out in the middle of the arbor, with participants in the festivities standing on either side, holding mugs of dark beverages up as they face the camera. Among them are Nellie Didier Temple, fourth from right and Walter Temple, back left and Maud Romero Bassity, back right. The partygoers are all dressed in Mexican costume or cowboy outfits. Grape vines cover much of the arbor and, therefore, it is difficult to tell if the view is to the north toward the Workman House or to the south toward the Water Tower. On the upper left of the reverse of the firstcopy, in pencil by a former museum curator, is the inscription "Source - Workman and Temple Homestead / 'In front of Workman Home - / under Grape Arbor' / 1920's [sic] party." The copy is cropped on the top and sides with only a border on the bottom and has a pencil inscription on the reverse by a former museum registrar reading "Saint Joseph's Catholic Church Altar Society / Under the Workman House Arbor." At the bottom another inscription reads "Source: Workman and Temple Family Homestead Museum Archives." A copy negative is 99.38.1.11. In good condition, the object shows little indication of wear or damage. Number-Units: 1
