Description

ST. JOSEPH'S ALTAR SOCIETY PICNIC, WORKMAN HOUSE COURTYARD Color: Black; White A black and white copy negative of the St. Joseph's Altar Society picnic, Workman House courtyard arbor, 1928. A long table or set of tables with a white cloth, centerpiece, place settings and food are set out in the middle of the arbor, with participants in the festivities standing on either side, holding mugs of dark beverages up as they face the camera. Among them are Nellie Didier Temple, fourth from right and Walter Temple, back left and Maud Romero Bassity, back right. The partygoers are all dressed in Mexican costume or cowboy outfits. Grape vines cover much of the arbor and, therefore, it is difficult to tell if the view is to the north toward the Workman House or to the south toward the Water Tower. On the upper left of the reverse of the print, in pencil by a former museum curator, is the inscription "Source - Workman and Temple Homestead / 'In front of Workman Home - / under Grape Arbor' / 1920's [sic] party." As a newly created copy negative of print 99.5.30.643, the object is in mint condition. Number-Units: 1
