Description

STEEL SUPPORT FOR EAST WALL OF WORKMAN HOUSE BEFORE ITS COLLAPSE Color: Brown A color polaroid photograph of the placement of steel rebar against the east wall of the Workman House, before its collapse, probably in the spring of 1977. Two workers stand in a trench dug at the base of the wall with their hands on the steel, performing some unidentified task. The rebar is about six feet high on the wall and curved to extend a short distance away from the house at the bottom of the trench. All plaster is stripped away from the adobe, though still left on the brick wing additions at the south (far left) and north (behind the workers) ends of the house. At left is a large hole in the adobe wall, though it is not known if this was done during restoration or some earlier time. A small portion of the roof cornice is at the upper right. At right are planks of wood on the ground, which appears to be wet, perhaps from recent rain. An inscription in blue ink at the bottom of the artifact reads "East Wall Steel in place / Before Collapse of Adobe." With little indication of wear or damage, the artifact is in good condition.
