Description

Color: Black; White; Yellow A stereoview of a street in downtown Los Angeles, ca. 1880s. The side-by-side images, which are adhered to a yellow cardboard, show an unpaved street along which are some carriages and several buildings. Almost all of the structures appear to be of brick, and many have two floors and awnings at the ground-level. One building, at the left of the foreground, has three floors and is very ornate with brackets along the top, arched windows, keystones, and decorative signage. These signs indicate that a dry goods and a furniture company are among the building's occupants. On the opposite side of the street is a smaller structure that has a sign at the front in the shape of a boot obviously indicating a cobbler or a shoe store. At the right of this business is another street that runs horizontal. At the bottom left of the right image are the city name and state. At the left and right of the yellow cardboard, within an ornate scroll, is "AMERICAN SERIES." On the top left of the back is "Calif." and at the right is "LA." Although in good overall condition, the artifact does have some damage including abrasions and creases at the corners; surface soiling; some discoloration; some moisture damage; and a stain at the right of the back.
