Description

Color: Black; White; Yellow A stereoview of orange groves in Los Angeles, ca. 1878. The side-by-side stereo sepia images, which are adhered to a yellow cardboard, show a full-grown orange tree in the foreground; on its branches are many of the fruit. To the right is part of a full irrigation ditch. At the background is the rest of the grove. The area closest to the photographer appears to be newly planted. Part of a mountain range is in the distance. At the bottom right corner of the right image is "No. 79 The Orange Groves of Los Angeles...." the rest of the printing is missing. Printed vertically along the far left of the cardboard is "Photographed and Published by," and down the right side is, 'A. C. Varela, Los Angeles, Cal." The artifact is in fair condition with several missing sections to the cardboard missing; surface soiling; discoloration; creases; stains; and tears.
