Description

STEREOVIEW OF THE BELL TOWER, MISSION SAN GABRIEL, CA. 1905 Color: Black; White; Gray A stereoview photograph of the bell tower of the Mission San Gabriel, ca. 1905. The dual image, mounted on gray board, shows the tower and its six various-sized bell openings and, within four of these openings, the bells. The wall separating the tower from the church building is at right and only a small portion of the south wall of the church is at the far right. In the foreground are two women standing one on the far left, as if walking toward the other, who stands next to a palm tree. Behind a low wall near the building is a planter wioth shrubs and a small tree. A palm tree's fans are at the left. At the lower right of the bottom margin is the inscription "13555--San Gabriel Mission, Southern California." At the left margin is the manufacturer name and the phrases "COPYRIGHTED / Manufacturers / MADE IN U.S.A. / Publishers." At the right margin are cities, evidently locations of offices of the publisher. These include Meadville, Pennsylvania; New York; Portland, Oregon; London; and Sydney. At the space along the center of the top between the two curved borders of the images is the number "241." On the reverse is a description of the Mission and of Spanish missions generally. The latitude and longitude are also provided, as are the identification numbers "241" and "13555" seen on the front. Aside from some edge wear and very light discoloration, the artifact is in good condition.
