STOCK CERTIFICATE, LOS ANGELES IMPROVEMENT COMPANY, 1880s
Color: Black; White
A stock certificate from the Los Angeles Improvement Company, 1880s. The document, printed by Kingsley, Barnes and Company, the name and address of which is at the lower left corner, has the certificate number "132" in a very stylized banner at the top left; the incorporation date of the company, 17 February 1885, at the center; and a stylized banner with space to fill in the number of shares at the right. Below this is the city of issue, Los Angeles; space for the date; room for the name and number of shares of the owner of the certificate; the name of the company; and, at the bottom, space for signatures of the company Secretary and President. The certificate was not issued so all areas are blank. At the far left is an indication that capital stock of the company was $200,000 with 10,000 shares of issue at $20 each. The image of a bunch of grapes in this section may indicate that one major function of the company was to develop agricultural properties, particularly vineyards. There is also the image of a dog's head at the bottom between the spaces for company officers' signatures. With little indication of wear or damage, except for very light edge discoloration, the artifact is in good condition.Lexicon
