Description

Color: Green; white "Successful Homes and How to Build Them" by Charles E. White, Jr. (2nd edition, New York: The Macmillan Company, 1921), 520 pp. The green hardcover book has an image, bordered by a single green line, of a white Colonial-style door surrounded by a stylized design of branches, leaves and brick in a light green. The title and author's name are in a mottled white and blue. On the spine, the title, author's name, and publisher's name are in the same mottled colors with an image of a shuttered window between the title and author's name. The twenty-nine chapters cover the steps of building a custom house including: site selection; knowing styles; planning rooms; devising specifications; knowing legal documents; excavations and foundations; advantages of framed homes; exterior finishes; masonry homes; fireproof homes; carpentry and cabinet work; roofing; plumbing; heating; plastering; finishing touches; appliances; lighting; hardware; remodeling; and garages. There are many black and white photographs; copies of forms; and drawings of homes and details. With overall surface soiling, abrasions and dents, and fading of spine lettering on the cover; and the beginnings of a loose binding, the artifact is in fair condition.
