Description

Surrender of Walburga Oesterreich to Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department, 17 April 1930. The Associated Press photo shows the accused murderess with her attorneys Jerry Geisler and Meyer Willner and a sheriff's captain in the latter's office, with all four looking at a piece of paper, perhaps an indictment. The incident involved the 1922 murder of Oesterreich's husband by Otto Sanhuber, Mrs. Oesterreich's illicit lover. Although there was an immediate inquiry, there were no charges until an attorney friend of the widow submitted evidence to the police in 1930. Mrs. Oesterreich, however, was not tried and Sanhuber, though convicted on manslaughter, was freed because of a statute of limitations expiration. Mrs. Oesterreich lived until 1961. With creases, some paper curvature and slight soiling, the condition is good.
