Description

TEMPLE AND WORKMAN, BANKERS, CANCELLED CHECK, 8 MAY 1872 Color: Blue; Orange; Red; White A cancelled check from the Temple and Workman bank, 8 May 1872. At the top is the check number space, which is blank. To the upper right is the city and state and space for a date, which is filled in. Below these is the company name in elaborate script. Under the name is the payee's name line, which has David W. Alexander. Instead of the term "or Bearer" which follows the payee line, the word "Bearer" is crossed out and "order" handwritten in. The dollar amount, $1,500, is written in and the numerical amount is at the lower left. The account holder's signature line has William Workman's name "per Fredk. Lambourn," whose writing is on the check. Lambourn was the ranch foreman for Workman at La Puente. At the left edge is a design that looks like ribbons in an oval form with floral decorations around it. A two-cent U. S. Internal Revenue stamp is placed upside down at the top of this part of the check. Just right of center is a paid stamp in blue ink dated May 9, 1872 from Temple and Workman. On the back center is Alexander's endorsing signature. There are two vertical folds about one-third in from each side. These have dirt or some staining on the reverse, but with only a few creases, dented or dogeared corners, a fingerprint at the edge where Lambourn's name is and small losses to the edges, the overall condition is good.
