Description

Color: Black; White A black and white photograph with one reproduction copy of the Temple family barbeque celebrating their first oil well, Temple Oil Lease, Montebello, 25 June 1917. There are approximately 350 persons in this panoramic view. The persons in front crouch or sit on the ground, while those in the row behind sit on a series of benches. There must also be benches for people in back to stand upon, while some persons on the ends stand on the ground. In the background is a large clump of trees, in the midst of which is a building. This may be the 1869 Basye Adobe, which the Temples moved into when they purchased the oil lease property in 1912. To the left is the northeast corner of the Montebello Hills with one oil derrick--possibly the Temple Well #1 or one on the Baldwin portion of the field. Seated in the second row at the center are the Temple family with, from left to right, Agnes, Wally, Walter, Sr., Edgar, Laura and Thomas. Six or seven persons to the right in a white cap and white shirt is Milton Kauffman, the business manager for Walter Temple. Ten persons to the right of Kauffman and up one row, in a dark suit and white mustache, is John H. Temple, surrounded by some of his children, and four persons to the right of him is Boyle Workman. Margarita Temple Rowland is at the far left with some of her children, as well. There are some major stains at the far right and a few creases, but the artifact is largely in good condition.
