Description

Color: Black and white A black and white photograph of the Temple Block, ca. 1880s. The image, measuring 6 1/2"H x 8 1/2"W, is mounted on a dark gray board and shows the block from the east side of Spring Street, just north of Temple Street. The three-story edifice at the end of the block is most visible and several signs of tenants are clearly seen. To its right can be seen small portions of two of the two-story buildings that comprised the rest of the block. At far left is the end of a streetcar and toward the bottom center is a horse-drawn carriage. In the lower right foreground is a blurred image of a man and an awning for the building next to the photographer. Pasted onto the rear of the board is an article from an undated and unidentified newspaper about plans by the block's owners, Kaspare Cohn, Harris Newmark, and Marco A. Newmark, to raze the structure and erect a ten-story structure. This was never done, however, and the block was not razed until 1925 in preparation for the construction of city hall. In poor condition, the artifact has a large section of the upper left corner torn off; tape attached to the image in that corner; abrasions and chips throughout the board; surface staining and abraded edges on the image and a good portion of the left side of the article missing, as well as it being discolored.
