Description

Color: Black; White A black and white reproduction photograph of the Temple family and others at an event at Rancho La Merced, ca. 1914. This is a copy of the original and much of the background on which the original was shot is visible. The group consists of over 25 persons standing on a road, perhaps San Gabriel Boulevard in front of the Basye Adobe, where the Temple family then lived. At left, below a California flag, is Laura Temple and, in front of her, Edgar, Thomas and Agnes. Walter, Jr. is above them with his hands on the lower handle of the flag. Part of an American flag appears to be at the far upper left, on the same handle as the California flag. Below this appears to be a crossbeam and picket fence making up a gate to the Basye Adobe. To the right is a telephone pole, while in the foregound is a shadow of someone standing near the photographer. None of the other persons in the group is known. At the bottom left edge of the original is the inscription, in Walter Temple's hand, "She is going . . ." and the inscription is interrupted by the torn bottom right corner. On the reverse are pencil inscriptions, an earlier one read "c 1917 or 1918" with a drawing of a flag and lines and "2 telephone poles w/flagpole / at top." The aforementioned dates are crossed out and, in the cataloger's hand is the date "1914" and identifications of the Temple family below the drawing. With little indication of damage or wear, the artifact is in good condition. Number-Units: 1
