Description

Color: Black; White A photograph of the Walter and Laura Temple family posed next to the Basye Adobe, ca. 1914. The family is posed on a dirt yard at the side of the house with Mr. Temple at the back right and Mrs. Temple at the back left. In front are their four children, from left to right, Agnes, Walter, Jr., Edgar, and Thomas. Next to Agnes is a wash tub under a spigot that comes from the ground. A wall, a window, part of the gabled roof with a chimney protruding through it and long beams extending from the eaves out toward the family are all notable features of the building. Next to the wall are sawhorses, hoes, and other implements. In the background right is a tree and in the distance other trees and plants. The Basye Adobe was an 1869 structure that the Temples bought in 1912, when they purchased some sixty acres of land, including a section in the Montebello Hills. About the time of this image, Thomas Temple discovered oil indications that brought great wealth to the family. With some dents at the edges and corners and light surface soiling, the overall condition is good. Number-Units: 1
