Description

An creme-colored handmade Princess lace wedding gown, ca. 1858. The dress has a silk lining and features intricate embroidered applique work with vines, leaves and flowers with many sections of border-like detail. Two sections of the dress are loose. The dress is said to have been made in Paris and first worn by Maria Refugia Martinez, first wife of Thomas Workman Temple, for their marriage on 1 January 1866 at Mission San Gabriel. It was also worn by Gabriela Quiroz Temple at her wedding to Thomas W. Temple II on 19 November 1938, also at Mission San Gabriel. There are some tears in the lace netting, as well as worn, frayed and torn sections on the lining and the dress is overall in poor condition.
