Description

Color: Black; White A black and white photograph of the construction of the Tepee at La Casa Nueva, 1927. The photographer stood to the east and captured a mason laying adobe bricks on the south side of the structure. The wall was up on the east side several layers about the door and window and less high on other sections. To lay the adobes and create a rounded and tapered look, a wood frame system is within the walls and has a rounded top. A curved piece connectd to the frame and extending on the outer portion of the wall, near the worker at left, appears to help guide the angle. The scaffolding on which the laborer stood consisted of a tall sawhorse with a plank of wood to stand upon. In the foreground are smaller sawhorses, debris and, on the right, a pile of dirt. A wooden box of mortar with a tool handle emerging from it is at center and next to this is one of the circular adobe planters found around the home. In the background is the top of one of the palm trees planted near the Mission Walkway in the southwest corner of the west lawn. On the reverse upper left is a pencil inscription by a former museum curator reading "Source - Bob Brown." There is a stain at the top left and bottom right of the front and what seems to be discoloration on the upper part of the reverse, but the artifact is in good condition. Number-Units: 1
