Description

Color: Black; White "The American National Game of Base Ball," ca. 1846. A photograph of a print, the image features men playing baseball. The diamond is in the center with a right-handed pitcher on the mound who throws an underhanded motion towar the right-handed batter at the plate. A catcher is behind him with arms out and is in a slightly hunched position. Four infielders appear at their positions with the shortstop playing inside the baseline. There are runners at first and third taking a lead. In the foreground is a man with a hat and long coat just to the right of home plate. A small crowd of men in hats and coats appears to his right standing near some of the players on the team playing offense. Three outfielders appear far in the background and a large crowd of spectators is assembled behind them without a fence seperating spectators from the field. Near the crowd are horse-drawn carriages parked under the shade of a long row of trees. On the bottom of the image are the words, "THE AMERICAN GAME OF BASE BALL." The back lower left corner has in black ink, "First Ballgame-6/19/1846/ Eligian [sic] Field, Hoboken, N.J./ Currier & Ives print." Below in pencil is, "Source Nat. Baseball Hall of Fame + Museum." The lower right corner has a stamp in black ink indicating the rights of the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum, Inc. as distributor. With little signs of wear, the image is in good condition.
