Description

Color: Brown, yellow, blue "The Boaster", a tile manufactured by the Mosaic Tile Company, ca. 1900s. The tile has a smooth surface and the glazings are shades of brown, yellow, and blue. There are four Roman figures, two male and two female pictured--one female lies prone on a white wall in the backgound and there are vines and leaves behind her, the other sits on a low wall in front. One of the men, half figured and wearing a helmet, is at left, reclining on the low wall and holding an arm upraised. The other male figure stands at right with hands on hips and facing the figures on the low wall. A rooster, no doubt symbolizing pride stands next to the "booster" figure, while two small birds are in front of the low wall. A short poem titled "The Booster" is inscribed in the face of the low wall and reads, "THE BOOSTER / In the house, in the market, in the streets,/ Everywhere he was boasting his feats; / Till one said with a sneer, / 'Let us see it done here! / What's so oft done with ease, one / repeats' / DEEDS NOT WORDS." On the bottom are four feet with modern felt pads on them, but there are no maker's marks on the bottom. so the tile is in good condition.
