Description

"THE CALIFORNIA ILLUSTRATED REVIEW," JANUARY 1923 Color: Black; White "The California Illustrated Review," Volume VII, Number 77, January 1923, published in Atascadero, California. This issue is largely devoted to "Greater Los Angeles: The Most Marvelous City of the World," featuring some descriptive text by the editor, E. G. Lewis, but mainly dozens of photographs by the periodical's photographer, J. L. Padillo. These images are under broad subjects including the city hall; banks and office buildings; department stores and theaters; shopping districts; universities and schools; oil fields; homes; orange groves; and leisure areas, such as racetracks and golf courses and country clubs. There is one page devoted to Atascadero and the back page is about the periodical. The rationale for the focus on Los Angeles may be supplied by photographs on the back page of the Illustrated Review's own oil wells at Huntington Beach and Signal Hill, then just beginning drilling. The artifact is in fair condition, with the binding particularly weak and small tears at the edges and creases throughout.
