"THE CENTURY ILLUSTRATED MONTHLY MAGAZINE," MAY-OCTOBER 1883
Color: Brown; Blue; Green
"The Century Illustrated Monthly Magazine," Volume 26, May to October 1883, by The Century Co., New York. The item has marbled boards in green and blue with leather trim and spine, on the latter of which is the periodical name and volume number. At the front is an index to the volume, including an article on page 803 on "Outdoor Industries in Southern California" by H. H., meaning Helen Hunt Jackson, which includes material on pages 817-818 on Jackson's visit to a sheep ranch on Rancho La Puente, on lands owned by Lucky Baldwin after he foreclosed on William Workman, an article by the same author on the mission-building work of Junipero Serra on pages 3 and 199, and a third article by Jackson "The Present Condition of Mission Indians in Southern California" on page 511. There are illustrations for each article and the many others of all kinds in the 960-page work. These articles by Jackson predated her famed book, "Ramona" by a year or so. With cover corner and edge rubbing, adhesive residue on the spine, spine brittleness, surface soiling, page browning, fading of spine lettering, flaking of cover elements, page foxing, losses to the spine, cover stains, tears on the cover, and overall wear, the condition is fair.Lexicon
