Description

The east side of Main Street, just south of Temple and Spring streets, Los Angeles, 1880. The view is taken from the triple intersection of these streets in front of the Temple Block and looks southeast. Five structures on the east side of Main north of Commercial Street are in view, including the Pio Pico Building (home of the Bank of Los Angeles, formerly the quarters of Hellman, Temple and Company), the St. Charles Hotel, and two-story, single-story and three-story buildings. At the lower right a man lounges against the post of a sidewalk cover fronting the Temple Block and a sign advertises a shooting range. Several horse-drawn conveyances are parked near the hotel. At the bottom right is an inscription: "Street Scene in Los Angeles 1880." With some soiling and edge abrasions, the condition is good.
