Description

Color: Blue; Red; Yellow "The Etude," September 1928 issue, published by the Theodore Presser Co. of Philadelphia. The front cover has the phrase "The Journal of the Musical Home Everywhere" at the top. Just below this is the periodical's title in white letters, and both superimposed over an image by F. S. Cook titled "THE GIFT OF THE INSTRUMENTS." This shows a Art Deco-like representation of seven winged male figures, naked, except for blue fabrics draped over their bodies, each carrying an instrument, including panpipes, a lyre, a piano, cymbals, a radio, a phonograph, and a violin. A background of various shades of red, orange, and yellow, with shades of blue at the top resemble fabric. At the bottom are the prices per issue and year and the month and date. Contents include some forty articles on study, technique, and instruction; keyboard agility; the rhythmic orchestra; the Braille system; counting aloud; and folk elements in music. There are also several sections of reproduced scores, divided into the categories of "Fascinating Pieces for the Musical Home;" "Classic, Modern and Contemporary Master Works;" "Outstanding Vocal and Instrumental Novelties;" and "Delightful Pieces for Junior Etude Readers." Many black and white photographs and drawings, as well as a great many advertisements are included. In fair condition, the artifact has heavy soiling, abrasions, and wear; small tears; adhesive tape; stains; and a nearly lost upper right corner on the cover; page yellowing; and a pencil inscription reading "647" at the upper left of the front cover.
