The first elementary school in El Monte, ca. 1900. The view shows the French Second Empire-style two-story wood structure sitting in an area surrounded by some trees. With weeds present around the area and debris near the structure, it seems clear the building had been abandoned. A lengthy ink inscription on the reverse notes the location on Lexington Avenue and that the structure was replaced by a new brick schoolhouse in 1908. It is also noted that the first high school opened on this spot in 1901, hence the estimated date. Two sisters, Laura and Emily Wiegand, are mentioned as attending the two newer schools. With some heavy creasing, a fragile lower right corner, and soiling, the condition is fair.
