Description

Booklet: "The Golden Scroll" by John Steven McGroarty (San Gabriel: The Mission Play Foundation, [1926].) An booklet giving a brief history of McGroarty's "The Mission Play", first performed at the Mission Inn in Riverside and produced at San Gabriel from 1912. The cover has a lined border with the title, author, a quote, and publisher information. McGroarty sought to build a new playhouse in San Gabriel, creating The Mission Play Foundation for this purpose. In the text is mention of an individual who had contributed largely toward the theatre--this could be Walter Temple or Henry Huntington, the two largest contributors to the project. Also, Temple's business manager, Milton Kauffman, was a director of the Foundation. The booklet is in poor condition with discoloration, wear, creases and the upper right back corner torn off. From the Thomas W. Temple II Collection. Donated by Ruth Ann Michaelis. Written in pencil at the front lower center, "Return to/TW Temple II."
