"The Land of Sunshine," Vol. 3, Number 1, June 1895, edited by Charles F. Lummis and published by the Land of Sunshine Publishing Company, Los Angeles. The front cover has the date, volume, and number at the top and the price per issue and per year, as well as the publisher's information at the bottom. Within a thick black border is an image of a mountain lion perched on a flat stone outcropping and a sun with extending rays as an aura around the animal's head. The title is around this image, while below is the editor's name and the name of Los Angles with a rose vine intertwined around these. Features include poetry, fiction, articles on animals, children, the origins of portions of the book "Ramona"; invalids; the first printer in California; sugar beet cultivation; and descriptions of Los Angeles, its University Park neighborhood, and Santa Monica. There are many black-and-white photographs and many advertisements, including one from Fred J. Smith, who later owned the Homestead from 1899-1903. In good condition, the cover has some soiling, fading, a small loss of the bottom right corner of the front, and a few small stains, while there is some slight discoloration on pages, which were cut somewhat roughly.Lexicon
