Description

Color: Blue; White; Yellow "The Mentor," April 1928 issue. The periodical has a gold leaf-and-vine design within a blue-colored background border and the words "SCIENCE;" "TRAVEL;" "ART;" "HISTORY;" "LITERATURE" in scrolls placed within these designs. These subjects are those covered by articles found within the publication. Within the border is the periodical title, cost per copy, and date and year of publication. An image, in blue and gold, of a man in early American costume standing behind a door to what is called "Ye Old Dog's Head Inn," takes up much of the cover. At the bottom are the words "AMERICANA - ANTIQUE FURNITURE, GLASS, CHINA, / POTTERY --- OLD IRON BECOMES A PRECIOUS METAL." Articles are about such topics as American decorative arts, furniture, and historic buildings; wall paintings in China; the novelist Fannie Hurst; the gift of cherry trees by the Japanese government to the American government and planted at Washington's Potomac Park; and an Indian chief from the northeastern United States. There are many black and white photographs and other illustrations, as well as many advertisements. In fair condition, there is significant pest damage to the right edge of the front cover; cover creases, surface soiling, stains, and some tears; mustiness; discoloration to some pages; and losses on the spine.
