Description

Color: Blue; White; Yellow "The Mentor," February 1928 issue. The periodical has a gold leaf-and-vine design within a blue-colored background border and the words "SCIENCE;" "TRAVEL;" "ART;" "HISTORY;" "LITERATURE" in scrolls placed within these designs. These subjects are those covered by articles found within the publication. Within the border is the periodical title, cost per copy, and date and year of publication. An image, in blue and gold, of a wood engraving of a ship captain, covers much of the cover. At the bottom are the words "FIFTY YEARS OF PINAFORE - THE STORY OF / THE GREAT PARTNERSHIP - GILBERT & SULLIVAN." Articles are about such topics as the famed British team of musical theater; rivers made famous in song; historic buildings in California; a profile of Rudyard Kipling; George Washington and Abraham Lincoln, in honor of their February birthdays; the projected project on Mount Rushmore, then soon to begin; Daniel Boone and his relationship to Lincoln; winter birds; and the muralist Lillian Gaertner. There are many black and white photographs and other illustrations, as well as many advertisements. At the top right front corner is the stamped price of 10 cents, although the cover price is 35 cents. With cover creases, surface soiling, apparent silverfish damage at the top right corner of the front, and a few stains and tears; losses at the top and bottom of the spine; discoloration on some pages; and mustiness, the object is in fair condition.
