"The Mission Play: How California Began," a pamphlet advertising the passion play, 1928. The play name is at the top of the front with the name of author John Steven McGroarty below. The subtitle is under McGroarty's name. An image of a priest blessing a kneeling Indian hovers cloud-like above the Mission Playhouse, which is identified by text at the bottom as the new home of the play. The back cover has an advertisement for the Mt. Lowe resort above Pasadena, mentioning the electric railway access to the mountain retreat. The printing firm's name and location is in small type at the bottom. Two panels appear when the pamphlet is opened with an image of a dancer, guitarist, an Indian with a feather headdress, a priest and other figures. At the top is "MISSION PLAY / Fiesta Scene" while a logo has "17th YEAR / OVER 100 / IN THE CAST" below. At the bottom of both panels is information on performance times, prices, box office locations, alternate ticket purchase locations, and listing of times for special electric train service from Los Angeles to San Gabriel. When the artifact is completely opened four panels appear with a short synopsis called "What the Mission Play Is" by McGroarty, explaining its history as well as components. Four black and white photographs of scenes from the play flank the text. A box at the bottom of one panel highlights actor R. D. MacLean, who portrayed Junipero Serra. Aside from a few small creases, the artifact has little wear and is in good condition.Lexicon
