Color: Brown; Green; Red; Yellow
A program for the Mission Play, a passion play by John Steven McGroarty, ca. 1923. The front cover has an image of the Mission San Gabriel bell tower at the upper portion, with the leaves of palm trees below the tower. At the bottom is the play's title, author's name and location of presentation (the Mission Playhouse), as well as the name of the business manager, E. K. Hoak, and his office. The back cover has an image of an Indian woman seated cross-legged and holding a basket in her lap. Behind her are tepees (rather than the wickiups actually used by local tribes) in a setting of trees, shrubs and, in the background, a range of mountains and colorful sky. In a box at the bottom is an admonition to visit the San Gabriel Mission and the Mission Curio Art Shop after attending the play. The interior of the 16-page document has favorable comments by "Six Great Americans" about the play; a sketch of the play's history; a list of staff; and a program listing with actors names, including Shakespearean actor Frederick Warde as Junipero Serra. Included among the dancers is Laura Temple's niece Juanita Vigare and her husband Juan Zorroquinos. There are many commercial advertisements by businesses in San Gabriel, Los Angeles, Alhambra and other nearby localities. In good condition, the artifact has a tear at the upper right of the front cover and some light cover soiling and discoloration.Lexicon
