Description

Color: Blue; Red "The New Paramount Method for Saxophone," by Thomas J. Armstrong, published by Wm. J. Smith Music Co., Inc., 1928. The softcover instruction book has a border with a floral garland, c-scrolls, and other designs and the publisher's initials inside an oval at the top center. Within is the title; author's name; a subtitle; the price (75 cents crossed out with the number "35" written in pencil to the left); the publisher's name and address; copyright date; overseas locations of the publisher; and a logo for the company's publication arm, called "Kamiki." On the back cover are advertisements for other Smith music instruction publications. The title page is identical to the front cover. Contents include the rudiments of music, including information on staffs, notes, leger lines, the treble clef, notes and rests, bars and measures, chromatic signs, double sharps and flats, and time; how to handle the instrument and producing a tone; a diagram of the saxophone; scales and charts and how to read and learn them; preliminary exercises, including chromatic notes, melodies, duets, scales, and practice pieces of many popular songs. Predictably, lessons become harder toward the back and include embellishments. From page 57 is a section on ragtime and jazz. A dictionary of musical terms and advertisement, similar to the back cover, of other music instruction booklets using the Paramount method. In good condition, the artifact has cover creases, dents, surface soiling, and stains, but the pages are in good condition.
