"The Old Franciscan Missions of California," by George Wharton James (Boston: Little, Brown, and Company,) 1915. The hardcover book, without a dustjacket, has the title and author's name at the top of the front in gold letters on a red cloth. The title, author's last name, and publisher's name are on the spine. The 287-page work includes a historical introduction; a discussion of the relationship between the missions of Lower (Baja and other areas of Mexico) California and Alta California (the modern state); the missions founded by Junipero Serra; those founded by Fermin Lasuen; and the founding of the three later missions; the Indians before and after the arrival of the Franciscans; the secularization of the missions; chapters on each mission and the presidio church at Monterey, in the order of their founding; the mission chapels or asistencias; the current condition of the Mission Indians; mission architecture; the Mission Inn at Riverside; interior decoration at the missions; and how to reach them. Several dozen photographs serve as illustrations. With edge and corner rubbing; dogeared corners; foxing on pages; moisture damage; scratches on the cover; tears of the cloth; and severe fading of the spine, the overall condition is fair.
