Description

"THE PHILHARMONIC ORCHESTRA OF LOS ANGELES: THE FIRST DECADE, 1919-1929" Color: Red "The Philharmonic Orchestra of Los Angeles: The First Decade, 1919-1929," by Caroline Estes Smith (Los Angeles: n. p.,) 1930. The 283-page hardcover book, without a dustjacket, has a red cover with the title and author's name on the spine. Contents concern the origins of the Los Angeles Symphony and symphonic music in the city; William Andrews Clark, Jr., the orchestra's founder; each season of the orchestra from 1919-20 to 1928-29; the Hollywood Bowl; Walter Henry Rothwell, the director of the orchestra before his 1927 death; and the present and future. Appendices are for premiere performance listings, including world and local premieres; soloists at popular concerts; soloists in symphony pairs; selections by soloists; season dates of popular and symphony concerts; soloists for the seasons for both concert types; the repertoire of works; and personnel. An index and many photographs are also included. As a withdrawn library book, there are many markings, stamps, and the checkout pocket and card at the inside of the back. With cover and spine rubbing; dented edges and corners; cover soiling; yellowing on pages and fading on the cover; fading of spine lettering; flaking of page edges; moisture damage at the upper portion; front cover scratches; and tears to the spine and cover fabric, the overall condition is fair.
