2006.281.1.1Description
THE ROUND HOUSE, LOS ANGELES, O. E. Tyler, ca. 1880. The structure, built by George Lehman as a beer garden, was located on the west side of Main Street, just south of Third Steeet. The view is from the middle of Main Street and shows the steeply roofed, conical-shaped structure and landscaping, including a large cactus, a cypress stree, and other plantings, as well as a wooden fence in the front and sides. Tyler's name and address are on the right margin and the series name "VIEW OF LOS ANGELES AND VICINITY" is at the left. On the reverse is an ink inscription "Old Round House / Main St Los Angeles/ Cal." There is a Museum artifact, 2005.289.1.5, of the structure attributed to Tyler, but it is a different view, although from nearly the same angle. With two missing pieces on the left image, including at the roof of the structure, and heavy soiling, the overall condition is fair.Lexicon
