Description

"The Sphinx," the newspaper of Ellis Villa College, Los Angeles, Vol. 1, No. 1, 12 March 1885. The item, published by the A. T. Literary Society of a short-lived girls' school founded by Rev. John Ellis of the First Presbyterian Church and located about a mile northwest of today's Los Angeles Public Library in what was known as Crown Hill, has material on literature, a trip to Santa Monica, news of the college's students, and other material. Ellis was also proprietor of the Belmont Hotel, which burned in 1887, and which site became Belmont High School. With the item in two pieces at the horizontal half fold, edge tears, browning and fragility, the condition is poor.
