Description

A cabinet card photograph of the Van Nuys Hotel, Los Angeles, by Treen and published by Best and Company, ca. 1896. The image is taken from Main Street looking northwest toward the structure at the corner of Fourth Street. The six-story structure, last known as the Barclay Hotel, appeared to have been newly-constructured and featured wide awnings on the first floor. At the far left is the Isaias W. Hellman residence, now the site of his Farmers and Merchants Bank building and south wing. Isaac Van Nuys, San Fernando Valley rancher and developer, built the hotel in 1896. With stains at the left side, partially on the image, heavy soiling, and bumping and rubbing to the mount edges, the condition is fair.
