Description

Color: Black; Gold "The Vineyards of Southern California," a report by E. C. Bichowsky to the Board of State Viticultural Commissioners of California and printed by A. J. Johnston, Superintendent of State Printing, Sacramento, 1893. The 47-page document is in a black pebbled cloth hardcover with the title and year in gold letters on the front and the state seal embossed on the back cover. Contents include a list of the nine officers and members of the board, an introduction, noting that the survey of producing vineyards in the region was spurred on by a grape disease. The report of Bichowsky is also joined by one done by Winfield Scott giving data on the grand total of acres devoted to viticulture in 1892 for Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside, San Bernardino, and San Diego counties with figures for each and a total and figures for such acreage by jurisdiction within each county. A report by Professor Ethelbert Dowlen concerns the general state of things, addresses Anaheim, or California, disease, new planting, soils, and other information. From page 14 to the end is a listing of viticultural activities by vineyardist within the jurisdictions by county noted above, with remarks by these individuals at the bottom of the pages. Additional material here concerns soil type and situation of the vineyard (valley, upland, or mountain.) With cover corner rubbing, adhesives on the cover, dented cover corners, light soiling, page yellowing, small losses to cover fabric, marks and inscriptions from a library, and tears to the fabric and a slightly loose binding, the overall condition is good.
