Description

Negative, Photographic: A black and white photographic negative of Thomas Temple and classmates from the La Puente [Temple] School, El Monte, ca. 1914. There are fourteen children shown in a dirt area with groves of trees in the background. Thomas is seated at right, wearing overalls with what may be denim shirt and pants, and dark shoes. There are two other boys seated with him. The remainder of the children stand in two rows, with only two boys comprising the last row. It is not known if this was a portrait of a certain class or grade range. The La Puente School was founded in 1863 on land donated by F. P. F. Temple and renamed Temple School in 1921 for Walter P. Temple's donation of a flagpole. The source is Carlos Hartnell. A print is 97.8.5. The negative is in mint condition, though, on the original, a large section of the lower left was cut out. On the source photo, at the bottom in ink was written, "James Rawson [arrow pointing to boys seated at lower left] temple school El Monte? Thomas W. Temple [arrow pointing to Thomas]."
