Description
THOMAS W. TEMPLE II AND HORSE NEAR THE WATER TOWER
Color: Black; White
A black and white photograph of Thomas W. Temple II and a horse standing near the Water Tower, ca. 1924. The slightly out of focus image shows Temple and the horse slightly left of center. Thomas wears a riding outfit with a light-colored pair of trousers and vest, calf-high boots, a white shirt with rolled up sleeves and unbuttoned at the collar and pith-like helmet. He holds the bridle of the horse in his left hand. The animal is dark-colored and has a full equipage. The two stand on Evergreen Lane next to the entrance gate to the Water Tower, at right. There are two tall concrete columns, like those leading to La Casa Nueva, with lamp sconces on the outer face. Between these columns is a wooden gate, identical to those found throughout the site. Resting against the columns are millstones, a larger one on the west column and a smaller one against the east. It is possible these were later moved to the La Casa Nueva courtyard fountain. Behind the gate is a portion of the original pump house with the small tower at the top. Landscaping behind Thomas and the horse also obscures part of the pump house. In the background left is a portion of the Mission Walkway and some landscaping. On the reverse is the word "VELOX" stamped on the paper and a number "11" stamped at the lower right. Other than slight discoloration on the back, the artifact is in good condition.
