Description

THOMAS W. TEMPLE II AT UNIVERSITY OF SANTA CLARA, CA. 1924 Color: Black; White A photograph of Thomas W. Temple II posed in front a vine-covered palm tree, presumably at the University of Santa Clara, ca. 1922. Temple wears a three-piece suit with dark-colored tie, white shirt, and a flower in his lapel. The thumb of his right hand is tucked into his vest pocket and his left hand is in his trouser pocket. On the grass in front of him is his snap-brim cap. Behind Temple is the flowering vine and a small portion of the palm tree trunk showing through the vine at the top. In the background are sections of sidewalk and lawns with palms and more vague items, probably including fencing and buildings. If the image was taken in Santa Clara and the date is 1922, the occasion may have been Thomas' graduation from the preparatory school at the university, although a 1924 date for his graduation with a junior certificate from the college program is also likely. At the center of the reverse are two pencil inscriptions, both reading "84." With some surface soiling, a dogeared upper right corner, bowing of the paper, and what may be an ink mark at the center left edge, the overall condition is good. Number-Units: 1
