Description

THOMAS W. TEMPLE IN THE LA CASA NUEVA COURTYARD Color: Black; White A black and white photograph of Thomas W. Temple II standing by the fountain in the courtyard of La Casa Nueva, about 29 June 1934. The photographer stands on the walk from the east wing to the Tepee. Temple stands at the east side of the fountain, dressed in a black or gray three-piece suit, white shirt, and dark tie and shoes. He holds a camera in his left hand. The fountain, to his right, appears not to be operating, though there are abalone shells and stone items, perhaps metates and the like on the large millstone. In the background center and left is the main part of the house, including much of the balcony [note, however, no railing for the stairwell, such as exists today, though a baluster at the bottom of the stairs is visible. To the right are portions of the east wing, including the dormitory addition made in the 1930s by the military school. There is a low hedge in front of Thomas and banana palms, small bushes and shrubs in the courtyard. A standpipe is at the lower right. In the hand of a former museum curator at the reverse top left is the penciled inscription "Thomas Temple", while, in the same hand in pencil at the lower right is "ca. 1942." A stamp above, this, however, has the initials "EPS" and the date 29 June 1934--the last two numbers of the year are so faint as to only be noticeable under magnification. Also at bottom right is the stamped number "44." Aside from a few small stains and minor surface soiling, the image is in good condition. Number-Units: 1
