2008.319.1.1Description
Three workers in the construction of the Third Street tunnel, Los Angeles, ca. 1900. The view shows the three man standing near some wood supports, surrounded by the excavated earth, and holding various items, including a shovel, what appears to be a borer handle, and perhaps a dynamite fuse. The man at the center with his hands on the borer handle is identified in an ink inscription on the reverse as Tom Conneff, who worked as a miner and laborer in the city and died sometime in the 1910s. The tunnel was started in 1899, completed in 1901, and widened and improved since. Notably, Conneff is wearing what appears to be Levi jeans. The other two men are unknown. With soiling, edge rubbing and a few creases, the condition is overall good.
