Description

Color: Black; Gold; Red "Toncan Metal Text Book on Corrosion," issued by the Stark Rolling Mill Co., 1913. The 79-page artifact has a red paper cover with a gold double-line border and a gold bar that crosses from the bottom left to the top right. Over this on a gold double-diamond background are the words, "TONCAN / METAL." Below this in black are the words, "REVISED AND ENLARGED / WITH / PHOTOS OF PROMINENT INSTALLATIONS / AND SHEET METAL COMPENDIUM / 2nd Edition." Also in black at the center of the top is the title. On the back is the same design as on the front except for the name of the Berger Manufacturing Co. at the center. At the beginning of the inside is a title page. The book is divided into three parts with part one being technical information introducing the product, its chemical composition, and conservation. Part two illustrates the quality of the metal through many black and white photographs of its construction and of structures in which the product has been installed. Some of the structures include factories; mills; hospitals; terminals and depots; office buildings; flumes; theaters; hotels; churches; and private residences. The last section is a catalog. Items available include a variety of metal sheets; roofing; siding; miters and drops; conductor pipes; and ridge caps and rolls. At the back are lists for standard weights, measurements and their rules, prices, and an index. Also included are many black and white illustrations. With some fading of the gold on the cover and pencil markings, the object is in good condition.
