Description

Color: Black; White A black and white reproduction negative of early development in the Town of Temple, 1923. The photographer stood on the side of a dirt road, probably Sunset Ave., now Temple City Blvd., looking to the northeast. At the right in the field is a large billboard with the wording "TOWN OF TEMPLE / 'SEE IT BUILD' / AT END OF NEW EXTENSION OF P. E. ALHAMBRA LINE / MARSH & COUGHRAN, EXCLUSIVE AGENTS / 808 UNION BANK BLDG. LOS ANGELES PHONE 15324." Atop the sign is an arrow pointing to the north and reading "TRACT OFFICE." Next to this are some workers in a field surrounded by piles of what may be cement or other building materials. Further up the road is a parked car and past this a few buildings. At the far background are rows of trees that are on lands outside of the tract boundaries, while the San Gabriel Mountains loom above the valley. Because the Town of Temple, renamed Temple City in 1928, was announced in May 1923, it is assumed the image was taken not long afterward when construction was just beginning in the new community. A print is available in the collection and is item 99.5.22.568. The artifact is in good condition with no signs of wear or damage. Number-Units: 1
