Description

Two snapshots on photo album paper of "Ramona's Birthplace, San Gabriel, Calif" and "Hill near Los Angeles," ca. 1920s. The first image is taken from across Mission Drive and shows the adobe with its staggered shingled roof next to a two-story frame building that was soon razed in favor of a Mission Revival-arched entrance. There are signs on the adobe reading "Ramona's Home," The Ramona Tea Shop," and "Entrance to Grapevine." This latter matched a large painted wood fence to the left reading "The Old Grapevine," which allegedly dated to the Spanish era. The adobe is no longer extant and the site is next to today's Civic Auditorium, formerly the Mission Play House, though the arched entrance remains. The reverse image shows a small round hill with the number "57" laid out near the crest and a Sherwin-Williams billboard and a larger billboard lower down and at the base of the hill. With little direct indication of wear, the condition is good.
