"Two Years in California," by Mary Cone (Chicago: S. C. Griggs and Company,) 1876. The 238-page hardcover book has a red cover with the title and term "ILLUSTRATED" on the front, along with a floral design at the lower left and a leaf-and-vine border along the top. The title, author's last name, and publisher's name are on the spine. Cone, from Marietta, Ohio, writes of her stay in California, which appears to have been in 1874 and 1875. Contents concern the climate, rainfall, historygeography and topography; reclamation; and tourist and settlement possibilities in the state, as well as sections on southern California; the San Joaquin Valley; northern California; the Sacramento Valley and Sacramento River areas; a visit to Yosemite; and a chapter on the Chinese. There are many illustrations, including a map of the state and lithographs of parts of the state. With much edge and corner rubbing; minor losses to the cloth on the spine; stains and soiling on the cover; yellowed pages; some flaking on the first pages; and general wear, the condition is fair.Lexicon
