Description

Color: Black; White A black and white photograph of an unidentified woman in the courtyard of La Casa Nueva, ca. 1932. The woman stands next to the south edge of the fountains and wears a light-colored knee-length dress or a pleated skirt and blosue combination. She wears a darker-colored hat and has her hands clasped in front. The fountain does not appear to have water running or in the basin, but there are objects on the larger millstone at the second level, including pestles and mortars, abalone shells, and gourds. In the background is a portion of the first floor east wing, showing the door to the Cold Storage Pantry, a window and the door to the bathroom next to Walter Sr.'s bedroom. On the second floor is a portion of the balcony and some of the second floor dormitory, which gives a rough date for the photo, because the dormitory was added after the Temples lost the property in 1932. In the foreground is part of the boxwood edging that lines the flagstone walkway and there is a low palm in the bottom left corner. On the reverse upper center is an oval stamp with the words "ANDERSON / Photo Service / EL MONTE" within and the number "26" is stamped at the lower left. Aside from some light discoloration on the reverse edges, the artifact has little indication of wear or damage and is in good condition. Number-Units: 1
