Description

Color: Black; White A black and white photograph of an unknown house, possibly in San Francisco, ca. 1929. The three-story, multi-gabled home has a Romanesque-like stone wall for the foundation, including several arched openings indicating the presence of a basement, and for the first floor, while the upper floors are wood-sided. There is a curved balcony on the second floor over a first-floor porch and there are several chimneys. The darkness of the wood, as well as some of the decorative work, point to a Craftsman influenced architecture. The landscape is undeveloped, so that there is much open dirt space and weeds in the foreground, with some plantings around the house, including a cactus or aloe vera. There may also be the street next to which the house sits at the background right, indicating that this image was taken from the side of the rear yeard or an adjacent empty lot. It is possible the house was newly completed when the image was taken. Just below the center of the reverse is an oval stamp with the words "ANDERSON / Photo Service / EL MONTE" within. At the upper right is the stamped number "7" which is crossed out and the penciled number "6" is next to this. See 96.7.65.4 for a similar image of this house. Aside from a few creases, the artifact is in good condition. Number-Units: 1
