Color: Brown, gold
A daguerreotype of an unknown woman, ca. 1850s. The image shows the woman seated and wearing a plaid dress with black fringe on the shoulder and a black corset-like field in the midsection. She has a gold and white cameo at the neckline, gold earrings, and what may be a necklace, as well. On her wrists are black ornaments resembling bracelets, but made of a fabric. In her hands at her lap she holds a bouquet of flowers. One arm is at rest on a cloth-covered table, which can only be partially seen. Color tinting was done on the flowers, with green and red, and gold on the cameo and earrings. The image is housed in a leather-bound case with gold metal framing, featuring a dentil-like border and stylized designs in the corners. The outer frame is gold with floral designs in the centers and corners. The outer rim is red velvet, as is the inner lining of the top of the case, which has a floral border and centered floral design. The outside of the case has a stylized design with a mesh-like background; floral or leaf patterning; and a center in a diamond-shaped design. A cloth binding was added to repair and hold the case together. With the metal frame above the image bent; water damage under the glass and on the image; fading on the velvet case lining; numerous scratches and abrasions on the leather; and the cloth binding repair coming loose, the artifact is in poor condition.Lexicon
