VAULT DOOR, I'OLANI PALACE, HONOLULU, HAWAI'IEntry/Object ID
99.5.33.975Description
Color: Brown
A color photograph of the basement vault door front in I'olani Palance, Honolulu, Hawai'i, 6 September 1978. The door is shown nearly in full with an "I"-shaped hinge that includes a long vertical bar at the left side and dual sets of hinges, the left sides of which are at the far left and the right sides at the center of the door. There are two sets of square plates at the top and bottom and bars that extend from the "I"-shaped hinge plate to the right side of the door. The wheel to open the vault door is just below center. There is some painted decoration, including a nature scene at the upper third and the name of the manufacturer, Diebold Safe & Lock Co., below this. There is other writing toward the bottom which is not readable, but seems to include the name of the California dealer as well as mention of the Hawaiian Islands. Because the style of the door's decoration and the manufacturer are the same as that of the vault door in La Casa Nueva and both doors date from the 1870s, the photograph was taken as a comparison. On the reverse, in blue ink, is the inscription "photo vault door / Iolani Palace, / Honolulu / Sept 6, 1978 / photo by archt." Below this, covered by a piece of tape, is the stamp of restoration architect Raymond Girvigian with his name, address, and telephone number. With little indication of wear or damage, the object is in good condition.
