Description

Print--"Los Angeles," 1856, by Charles Koppel. This print is considered to be the earliest published illustration of Los Angeles and is from Volume V of "Pacific Railroad Surveys." The view is of a small pueblo with many one-story buildings and a few two-story buildings centered around a central plaza. The cluster of buildings on the left, which includes a church, formed the plaza of the original pueblo. There is a man crouching near a building in the foreground, which is on a hill overlooking the scene. There are a few people and horses at the bottom of the hill near the pueblo; as well as mountains in the background which slope down from left to right. The print is made from three color plates and is in different shades of beige. "U.S.P.R.R. EXP & SURVEYS-CAL." is at the top left; "PLATE X" is at the top right; and "Los Angeles" is at the bottom center.
